This is a good book that seems well researched, and it certainly pulls no punches. I guess the audience for the book are Buck Owens' fans, mostly. Be be warned, this book will shatter your memories of the man. Even though I give it four stars, I almost don't want to recommend it on that basis. Maybe it's better to keep those fond memories.I know that the private lives of stars often are often troubled, and these people are not whom they are presented and promoted as being. And I was prepared for the usual array of unflattering revelations that you find with such people, such as womanizing, drug problems, short fuses, etc. With Buck you don't encounter the drug problems, but that's about the best that be said. Buck comes off as a downright evil businessman. He cheated people as standard operating procedure. He destroyed livelihoods at times, and ruined careers, over jealousies, petty grudges or slights, or even just for his dark amusement it seemed. And I mean he seemed to cheat almost everybody, including even the famed (and deservedly so) Don Rich, to whom Buck owed almost everything in my estimation. Don's masterful work on the Telecaster and tight harmony with Buck was what made Buck famous and put the Bakersfield Sound on the map, in my opinion. There are very few positive anecdotes or heartwarming episodes in this book. It is a descent into the hellish world of a selfish and greedy man who reigned over everybody in his orbit like a capricious tyrant, with great cruelty on display routinely. Many close to Buck came to hold the opinion that he suffered significant mental problems. If half of what's in this book is true, and I have no reason to suggest it isn't, they were so right. This book is a gripping tragedy, you see a man who is climbing to the top of world, while crushing everybody and also his soul along the way.I certainly did not expect that from my memories of the happy go-lucky Buck from Hee Haw, pickin' and singin' and clowning around, having a good wholesome time. The reality was not just different, as you might expect, but far, far worse.

If you wanna know more about Buck than you really should read this. It is well researched but not as fun a read as "Buck 'Em". As you will discover, time and time again what a complete jerk Buck Owens was. I can't fault the book for that if it's the truth. I detracted stars because I thought the writing could have been better. In places when she was making a point and then would include something unrelated. I also found some of the passages confusing and could not tell what she was trying to say even after going back over it.

Poorly and inaccurately written. I read just a few chapters of this book and had to put it down. The chapter that talked about the 1968 concert at the Fillmore West in San Francisco was a complete fabrication. As an 18 year old Buck Owens fan, I and a few close friends had the good fortune to not only attend both shows but were able to get back stage passes arranged through my friend's music teacher to interact with Buck and the Buckaroos for some conversation and pictures. There was not any pot smoking inside the crowd and there wasn't the smell of marijuana wafting through the air inside the Fillmore West in SF...despite what the author stated in the book. Pure fabrication.I'm not naive enough to believe that Buck, or Don for that matter, were infallible...they're humans too. But...I've attended many of Buck's concerts and have, on 3 occasions been able to get personal pictures taken at the Circle Star Theatre in San Carlos, CA, meet Buck at the Dream Bowl in Napa, go backstage at the Fillmore West, talk and get pictures. In 1989, at the Victoria Theatre in San Francisco I met Buck Owens for the last time. I brought a few photos from the Fillmore West shows to show Buck and hopefully get another autograph... one particular photo hit close to Buck's heart, a picture of Don Rich with myself, and two best friends backstage at the Fillmore West. I had managed to migrate into the press section at the Victoria Theatre while they were clearing out the fans and managed to get a one on one with Buck for at least 10 minutes. He was touched by the photo with Don and asked if he could have it...of course he could. We chatted for a while and, as usual, Buck was very gracious and humble...signed a few autographs and offered me an open invitation to visit him at his Crystal Palace in Bakersfield.Besides Sisk's poor, all to often boring and gossipy writing style I have to wonder why she felt it necessary to attempt to write the dirt and destroy Buck's character? I, for one, ain't buying into the book as a wholly accurate accounting of Buck's life. As I stated earlier, the accounting of the Fillmore West concerts was a fabrication...and puts a big question mark on Sisk's credibility and sources. Was Buck a womanizer? Probably! Was Buck a tough businessman? I have no doubt! Was Buck a complete a$-hole? I doubt that but I guess it depends on who you are and what your motives are.I'll always remember Buck Owens and the Buckaroos as my first musical love, the hard chargin, railroad train, upbeat telecaster playing hero's.

this writer was definitely not a Buck Owens fan, she had very few good things to say about him,but there are always two sides to everything! She sure didn't give him credit for much!

What a great book!! Written with honesty and candor about Buck's real personality and his deep dark secrets the general public wasn't privy to. However those who worked closely with him and were friends with him saw the real side of Buck. It was riveting and nearly impossible to put down.

Very interesting book, a page turner. A lot of detail about the life of Buck Owens, warts and all. I had been a fan of his but knew very little of his personal life until I read this book. Highly recommended.

bitter vindictive woman doesn't like Buck Owens for some reason. Copyed other books about him, and emphasized the negative.

Rather a severe account of the great honkey tonk legend's life and loves, but the talent of the man still shines through. I know many people consider this a hatchet job, but like all things, the truth of being a saint or sinner probably lies somewhere in between.
