Perfect pocket guide covering a lot of the sights in both Kyoto and Osaka. The areas are sorted into the major areas of interest and both Kyoto and Osaka sections overlap a bit (there are a few Kyoto sections, then a couple of Osaka sections and then back to Kyoto). I think they tried to just put the most popular sections in the front, such as Higashiyama in Kyoto and Dotonbori in Osaka. The guide, like most Lonely Planet guides, covers a lot of SIGHTS. This guide highlights a few restaurants, but they gladly don't devote too much space to exhaustive lists of restaurants and hotels - which I use TripAdvisor and Google+ for anyway. (And Airbnb is the way to go in both towns - $1000 total for the two places we booked, 11 nights, 3 people - seriously - and in Kyoto we booked a traditional, 19th century private home!)The other thing that is nice is this guide has travel information for getting to sights from central locations. For example, they give subway information, train information, and bus information that makes it easy to locate which station and type of transit works best. This is very convenient and one of the best aspects of this guide. Also it is very packed with information and very portable. Bonus!

Just returned from Japan (we flew into Nagoya; stayed in Hikone and visited Kyoto, Osaka and the Lake Biwa area). The book was helpful and I highly recommend eating at the Sodah restaurant in Kyoto if you visit. Also, make sure you are able to walk (pack at least one good pair of walking shoes), wear nice socks so you don't have to walk barefoot in the temples (they make you take off your shoes) and make sure you exchange $$ since a lot of stores don't take credit cards. Also, unless you love to sweat, avoid Japan in August! It's hotter than hell and the sun is strong - pack a Totes umbrella to use when you're walking. Japan is such a beautiful country; if I get to go again, I'll go in March (cherry blossom time).

I ordered this book based on the ratings and recommendations. It was a very helpful book as well as using google and the internet. We were able to find different places to visit while looking in this book. My family of 4 went to Japan for 14 days and we definitely checked off many of the places in the book. It's a good resource to use when visiting Japan. I also liked the size of the book because it was the right size to fit in the back of my jeans pocket and also in one of my jacket pockets. A great recommendation and resource for visiting Japan.

The format isn't very user friendly. It bounces between not having enough there and not being able to find what you need. I wish there had been a Top 10 Kyoto Eyewitness Book. The maps didn't really help and the items weren't grouped together very well. It was easier just using the phone. I was quite disappointed.

Good but too short for Osaka.mainly focused on Kyoto.

As I looked up places to see in the Kyoto area, I realized the maps in the book focused on just a small area of Kyoto, and not the places further afield, so I had difficulty determining location and distance of between sites.

I took this book along to Japan as a backpack reference. While obviously not as comprehensive as the full sized version, it had some great resources for getting around. Between this and a phrase book, I was able to communicate and find great things to do in whatever Kyoto or Osaka area I was in.

This is a great, compact guide book with all of the essentials. Highly recommended.
