Great book and exactly what I was looking for. My wife and I are planning a trip to NZ and I wanted to get something with actual pictures vs. illustrations. I am slowly working my way through it attempting to memorize as much as I can.

Comprehesive coverage of the birds one meets traveling around n.z. The weightiness of the book is a problem. If the publication had been made slightly bigger, reading would have been a more comfortable exercise. Apart from this small gripe the book is a worthwhile resource.

The photos and detailed info make this a great coffee table book. I love just leafing through it and am amazed at the variety of bird life portrayed. Sadly, it is way too heavy to take into the field with you. I will be visiting New Zealand next month and was hoping this book would be able to sort out the many unfamiliar birds. I will find out and report back. Photos are magnificent.

We received an autographed copy of this newly published guide while on a Wrybills Tour in New Zealand. Brent Stephenson, the photographer for the guide, is one of the founders of Wrybills.Although I am not a fan of photographic field guides, this is one of the exceptions to the rule. Another is the fabulous new guide to the Warblers, The Warbler Guide. Both take advantage of the relatively small number of species to cover by having numerous photos of each species. New Zealand has a small list of total species and a high number of endemics, as do most islands. New Zealand has six endemic families of birds, with a few hundred total species. All are covered well in the guide. Birders seeking all the families of birds take note.The photographs by Brent range from the merely excellent to mind-blowing, including the fantastic photo on the back cover of a New Zealand Storm Petrel walking on water. Some photos show birds in hand to emphasize a particular plumage difficult to show otherwise, but otherwise all photos are taken in the field.The text, a collaboration, is encyclopedic in scope, covering each species main field marks, comparison to related species, range, breeding and especially taxonomic information.Normally, taxonomy is a pretty dry subject, but Scofield manages to make it fascinating. Each species account has information about the English, Maori, and Scientific name. Some include some comments not specifically related to the taxonomy. For example, his discussion of Cook's Petrel states that the name is "a simple and fitting tribute to James Cook." It's hard to overemphasize the impact of Cook's voyages on New Zealand history.I loved the discussion of the Brown Creeper, a member of one of NZ's endemic families. This bird is completely unrelated to the bird in North America with the same English name, a situation that as Scofield notes, "has caused much trans-Pacific friction in recent years due to the existence of a Brown creeper, Certhia americana, in North America." He then notes that Americans have attempted to give the NZ bird an English name Pipipi [from a Maori name] without consultation." Indeed, both the latest Clements and IOC taxonomies call the bird Pipipi, a wonderful name, with several possible interpretations. Scofield explains that Pipipi includes the fragment Pi, meaning small, and Pipi meaning chirp, referring onomatopoeically to the bird's call. This may also be a sly pun, as the repeated Pi might mean "teeny tiny."Scofield concludes acerbically, "The North Americans can change the name of their bird."I agree wholeheartedly. A better name would be American Treecreeper, which describes the bird exactly.This is a fabulous addition to the ornithological literature, about New Zealand specifically, but also as a guide for other authors. In the NZ birding slang, it is a "Stonking good view."One note: The size and weight of this book may be a bit much to schlep into the field often. You may want to get the Hand Guide to the Birds of New Zealand to take into the field.Alternatively, you may prefer the iPhone app Brent has produced as a companion to the book.
