This is the best book on dissociation I've ever read. I am recovering from Complex PTSD. Dissociation is probably the most illusive, complicated, misunderstood, and daunting part of it all. To have a book that so clearly maps the internal, surreal, and horrific landscape is invaluable. Additionally, it lays out a path to recovery and healing (not that it can be done alone; a therapist is key). In the end the book offers hope -- the crippling affliction doesn't have to be a life sentence. Incredible. I can only hope the book gets into the hands of as many therapist as possible. So that in turn in can be of help to people who suffer with dissociation.

This is a college level text book and is not written as a self-help book. That being said, it is by far the most important book ever written in regards to understanding trauma and disassociation in human beings. This book cuts through so much of the misconception in regards to disassociation and helps to bring to definition these terms and behaviors that afflict the human psyche. The structured model of disassociation that the writers promote is both logical and intuitive at the same time and the reader with any experience with trauma will clearly see that this model breaks through and yet brings together an insightful and more complete picture of this devastating condition. This book is full of all the meat and potatoes that makes this book a text book and I will spare you and not rewrite it here.If you work in the mental health or"care" fields or are in some way touched by this condition and want to see the research, this book is for you.

While I would certainly recommend reading every single word, I sense an obligation to warn professionals that the book reflects and asserts beliefs about the effectiveness of exclusive, one-on-one therapy that simply do not stand up to the tests of "mental efficiency" the authors espouse. Having worked with borderline-organized personalities since Kernberg's and Meissner's time, it is clear to me that the internal =and= interpersonal Drama Triangles in play cannot reliably be kept in mind -- let alone overcome -- by the vast majority of therapists. Linehan's staged (and stage-aware), psychoeducational, skills building, and most importantly, group dynamics approach (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) is not only far superior for the patient... it protects therapists from crumbling under the weight of the relentless retriggering of their own traumatic affects, and the allostatic loading induced thereby.Psychotherapy's siren call to the afflicted who desire to compensate for their own injuries by leading others out of the wilderness requires a =lot= more than "good supervision," especially in a realm where the supervisors themselves are so often blind, deaf and senseless to their own continuing difficulties. Believing we're "okay now," and unconscious of our early life conditioning to be heroes and rescuers has taken an immense toll upon many. One does better to observe to notice to recognize to acknowledge to accept to own to appreciate that as often as it takes to understand that playing guru is a sure route to elevated blood pressure, sleep disorders, IBS or rationalized pill popping. No differently in my view than substance abusers, trauma survivors with complex PTSD need to see, hear and sense themselves via their mirrored images in group settings where others who are farther along Prochaska & DiClemente's fives stages of recovery. Because it is those others -- not any therapist -- who provide the scaffolding that simply does not exist in a one-on-one setting where the patient is locked into projections of the therapist as both rescuer here and persecutor there... just like his or her original abuser(s). Good as THS is, it fails entirely to understand that.

Individuals with complex childhood trauma can be rather difficult to live with. Much of what they do is extremely draining on everybody, and makes no sense! Except that if you read this book, it suddenly does make sense. Life will still be difficult and emotionally draining, but at least it can now be comprehended.A very detailed and comprehensive roadmap for treatment follows, which IMHO has a much higher likelihood of lasting success than what often qualifies as "treatment" for complex childhood trauma.I should have said "studied" instead of "read" this book, because it is not an easy read. And it is very possible that the described therapy is beyond the abilities of many professionals. But the model, and the book should be known much more widely than it is. If you are a therapist, and you have clients who you suspect might have experienced any kind of complex childhood trauma, you simply must study this book because it stands heads and shoulders above many others on the same subject and gives you many extremely useful tools. If you are a family member and aren't scared of post-graduate texts, it's highly recommended. If you have experienced childhood trauma yourself, this may not be for you because of the very nature of your condition: but, if you feel that meds and therapy aren't helping as well as they should, I suggest you buy this book for your therapist, and demand that your therapist justify their treatment plan given the analysis and recommendations in this book. (And buy yourself the other: http://www.amazon.com/Coping-Trauma-Related-Dissociation-Training-Therapists/dp/039370646X/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_y which is for you -- don't be scared, it's a tome and also not an easy read, but definitely useful.)Five stars.

Abdolutely brilliant. Foundational text for Trauma work.

This is a definitive volume on chronic trauma survivors. It describes the premise but also delivers with the various ways to restore wholeness to people with the dissociative types of disorders. This is the first book I've read that may actually provide a way out of the darkness for millions of abuse survivors. Brilliant!

Great research addition.
