Just finished Tim Pratt's City of the Fallen Sky and loved it. I grew up on Dungeons and Dragons, and some of favorite memories center around the famous adventure, Expedition to the Barrier Peaks. So the prospect of a "fallen city" made me very excited. Pratt's Fallen Sky doesn't include a crashed spaceship but i was not disappointed. We are introduced to the alchemist Alaeron who is being pursuedby a fantastic villain from Numeria named Kormak, and runs afoul of a retired adventurer now turned typical crimelord, Ralen Vadim. Alaeron is forced to team up with a woman named Jaya, and sent on a treasure seeking mission to the Mwangi Expanse to find the lost ruins of the fallen city of Kho. The pacing of the book is good and the entire book is filled with the adventure of the trio as they try to stay one step ahead of Kormak as they make the long trek to the ruins of Kho. The characters are excellent and feel multi-layered rather then being pigeon holed into typical RPG roles. Alaeron and Jaya have excellent chemistry together and the rogue/assassin/babysitter Skiver steals the show with witty dialogue, excellent bladework, and a secret that Pratt doesn't make you feel as if it was added just to provide shock and awe. Ok i'll reveal that little secret. Skiver is gay and I'm ok with it. In some of the sci-fi and fantasy books that have included a homosexual character that i have read make it seem as if this is supposed to be shocking or to make appear look how forward thinking i am. To me that detracts from the writing and insults the intelligence of the reader but that is just me. Ok rant over. The book is excellent, it's about the journey to Kho not just Kho itself. The problem i do have with the book is the pacing towards the end of the book when we begin to actually explore the ruins is the pacing. It suddenly feels rushed and a little haphazard. As if the restaurant is about to close and we just ordered coffee and dessert. You're unable to savor the last few chapters as we rush through what could have been a HUGE plot device. The epilogue is very good but a little disappointing as Jaya and Alaeron come to terms with their future together. Didn't see that coming have to admit. Loved it, want to read the next book with Alaeron and Skiver, Reign of Stars as soon as i can. Glad to see the Pathfinder fiction finally available for the Kindle, yay. Enjoy!!!!!

I thought it was a good read. Tim Pratt is the only author I've found so far that writes a pathfinder tales book I can enjoy and don't feel like a school teacher while reading. Few others I've read have been riddled with grammatical errors like they just ran spell check and then sent it to the printers.

I may have a huge penchant for alchemy and related topics, but this books was very engaging for me. Character establishment happened seamlessly and timed pretty perfectly so as to not create a break in the flow of the storyline. I loved this book and this is the third Pathfinder Tales I've read (bloodbound pool of stars) this is the best yet. Next is lord of runes.

Although I read the books out of order only knowing that the main character went to kho was really the only thing mentioned. Another amazing book to enjoy! I will toast a whiskey in your honor author! May the blessings of the writing gods see you write another.

No complaints. Interesting book, so far... Seller contacted me within a day. On page 113. Can't seem to put it down.

Fun if you like pathfinder

Another great read and another suggestion I must make to this series. Follow an Alchemist in a true to the class adventure and if by the end of this book you don't want to roll one up well then you my friend are crazy. Enjoy this read because I know I did.
